IMG_4212

One day out of the blue in early July, I got a message from the clinic.  They wanted me to call them to talk about Emmarie's test results.  Since we had given them a blood same about 30 days before, I thought they must have called us mistakenly.  When I called, the nurse apologized because somehow they had not notified me earlier.  they said that I needed to bring Emmarie in to get follow-up blood work because their were "issues" with her first sample.  I scheduled a time for the next day and hung up the phone smiling to myself because I figured they probably found, glove and skin tissue from the lady that drew the last sample.

The next day when we got there, we were ready to do our finger prick again, when the lady motioned us to the room next door.  I had brought Brad with me for back-up, and I was a bit suprised when she told me they would take Emmy from there unless we really wanted to come.  I must have looked a little suprised because she theyn asked if I was aware htey would be drawing blood through an IV today.  UM, NO, I was not aware that you would be shoving a needle in my baby's arm today.  Umkay, thanks.  I told her that we would feel more comfortable accompany them into the room.  At htis point Brad started to get a little green just thinking about the process and I told him he didn't have to come in but I would like him to.  The ladies took Emmy, and I tried to warn them that she was a fighter.  They gave a little laugh and said she wouldn't be a problem.

They really shouldn't have said that.

She proceeded to give them the fight of her life.  The lady stuck her three times before she even found a vein.  I was getting a little anxious because it is one thing for her to cry because she is throwing a fit, but this was starting to become the cry of a very scared little girl.  My mommy instincts started kicking in, and I asked them if I could have her so I could comfort her for a few minutes.  They gladly handed her over, and I tried to quiet her sobs.  Meanwhile they both took a break because htey were breathing pretty heavily.

I asked if it would help if I held her, and they tried in the other arm.  This way one lady could draw the sample and the other lady could devote all of her energy to holding Em's arm still.  They grudgingly agreed to do it my way if I thought I could keep her still.  In a matter of minutes they had their sample, and we were walking out the door.  They told me we should have the results by the end of the day and to expect a call.  Over a week later, they called and apologized again for not having gotten with us sooner.  They said that Emmarie is anemic and should begin taking soluble iron immediately.  Great, I thought.  She is going to love this.  After looking at three or four store, I finally found what she needed.  Amazingly, she didn't mind taking it.  I also increased her morning egg regime from two to three eggs.  We also made a concerted effort to make sure that she had a meat product at every meal.  We shall see if that helps.

Emmy had a lot of fun this month on our trip to Gulf Shores.  She played in the sand, ran into the waves (with us right with her), and soaked up some sun.  She also took two hour naps on the beach every afternoon under the umbrella.  It was like she was being lulled into a deep trance by the waves.  It gave us some time to just chill and not have to run after her every 10 seconds.  I will probably have to do a whole separate post about this trip to share all of the amazing pictures.

We have three teeth now!  Two bottom teeth and one of her top teeth.  I can see that the second one will be coming in soon, but for now, she looks a little bit snaggle-toothed.

She eats: chicken nuggets (cut into like 9 pieces), yogurt, apple cereal bars, milk (sometimes), 3 eggs every morning (to up her iron intake), some veggies, baby juice (cause quite an episode), WATER (you love it), chicken & apples, squash, mashed potatoes, french fries, toast, biscuits, iron drops, ice cream, cake, and cupcakes (thanks Nana).  You don't really like the texture of real meat or vegetables yet (except chicken nuggets) but you are satisfied with baby food for now.

You like: the ocean, the sand, building stuff, digging in the cabinets, climbing the stairs (we had to install expensive gates because you climb them so fast and it was dangerous), swinging, riding in your Cozy Coupe, playing with your water table, climbing on teh furniture, stacking soda cans at Nana's houes, going for walks, reading books, "talking" for everyone that you see, saying hi, dancing when we play loud music, and laughing on cue when other people laugh.  You think it makes you such a big girl that you are laughing with us.

You don't like: being told you can't get in the cabinets or climb on the stairs, the texture of real meat and some veggies (you immediately spit them out), having mommy hug other people or hold other babies if I am not holding you too, the dark, having to sleep in your bed (you only cry for a minute or two now), not having my full attention, having to be patient and wait your turn, and seeing other people play with toys without being able to take them.

We took Emmy to the doctor for her 1 year wellness check-up and to get her next set of shots.  In the past, this has been not my most favorite thing but completely doable.  I also usually had either Brittany or Bradley with me for moral support.  This time, it was just me, and It Went Down.  We had to wait for a while to get in even though we had an appointment.  Emmy wanted to look at all of the people in the waiting room, but I made her stay with me. Finally, it was time to go back to the room.  She got weighed and measured.  She was ____ pounds and ____inches.  For her weight she is in the 35 percentile and she is in the 10th percentile for height.  This was mildly annoying for Emmarie, but nothing that she couldn't handle.  When our doctor came in for the visit, he was accompanied by someone shadowing him.  He answered all of my questions and dispensed some advise.  After he left, the nurse came back in to give Emmarie the shots.  She had been sitting contentedly after the doctor left staring at herself in the mirror behind the patient bed. When it was time for her to lay down, she looked at me with these eyes that said, "I think I have done this before, but I am just not sure."  She was scheduled to get four shots and one oral admission.  Two shots in and the screaming started.  It did not subside.  She kept looking at me and screaming more as if to say, "HOW DID YOU LET THIS HAPPEN TO ME?"  I felt bad, but I just promised her that we were going to get ice cream or a snocone so just let Mommy get her out of there.  Then the nurse came back to inform me that we needed to go down to the lab next so they could draw some blood.  Freaking Awesome.

We sat down in the lab area, and a young lady came over to draw Emmy's blood.  She smiled at Emmarie and tried to hold her hand.  Emmy immediately pulled it away.  She was in no mood to make any new "friends."  It took both of us to hold her hand still. The lady had to prick her finger three times before she could get a place good enough to get the blood out.  At this point, my sweet baby more resembles a caged tiger that is being poked by a cattle prod.  Every time she gets a good drop of blood to put into the tube, the baby would somehow manage to yank her arm out of grasp and smear the blood on herself or the poor nurse.  By the end, both of us were out of breath and Emmarie was screaming so loud that people were coming out of their offices to make sure that someone hadn't been mortally wounded.  The nurse said shakily that she had never had ANYONE put up a fight like that.  It didn't help that their were blood stains smeared across her scrubs and all over her gloves.  I said a quick sorry and got us out of the doctor's office pronto before they could think of something else that we needed to do.

We have been thoroughly enjoying our summer vacation.  We stay up late doing projects and watching movies, and we sleep late.  We go swimming and I take her to the park to swing every once in a while. We don't do that as much as I would like to because it is really just too hot outside.
Emmy has been staying up with me (although I do make her go to bed by midnight).  She stays up that late and then she doesn't get up until 11:30 or 12:30 the next day.  SWEET.  Since I am a night owl and love nothing more than staying up until 2 or 3 in the morning, this has been the PERFECT schedule for us.

Nana and Papa bought her a Little Tikes Cozy Coupe for her birthday.  It was a pain joy to put together (ask Lacey), but it was definitely worth the effort once we got it put together though.  Emmy LOVES it.  She got in and practiced opening and closing the door for a while.  Then she let us push her around the room while she turned the steering wheel back and forth and honked the horn.  I can only imagine the kind of driver she will be someday.  Watch out in 15 years world!

Vocabulary update:  She says Ma, DaDa, Uh Oh, Bye Bye, Nana, B, and other sounds. She hasn't been progressing quite as much in phonics as I would like her to, but a lot of it is pure stubbornness.  She doesn't want to do anything that I want her to do!

She likes: Ice Cream, SnoCones, WALKING!, her Little Tikes Car, her baby doll, her baby doll stroller walking toy, THE WATER SLIDE PAPA BOUGHT, opening presents, clothes, swimming, being outside (if it's not too hot), climbing, trying to run away or escape her Mommy, singing songs, reading books, playing with the markers at Nana's house (with the cap on of course), smiling, sitting on the floor and playing with toys, to swing, snuggling (if it is her idea), music, being the center of attention, banging on pots and pans, playing peek a boo, and dancing around the house.

She dislikes: SHOTS, having blood drawn, being told no, waking up by herself, being put in her baby bed (still cries for 5-10 minutes when she has to go to sleep), the dark, being forced to eat her vegetables if she wants fruit or Mum Mums,  not having your complete attention (please do not try to check your phone if she is around), and being ignored/not picked up when she is ready for you to pick her up.

She eats: Eggs (can eat two whole eggs at a time!), biscuits, Whole Milk, baby milk, vanilla ICE CREAM, turkey chunks, cheese cubes, small crackers, Mashed Potatoes, refried beans, Carrots, Peas, Squash, Sweet Potatoes, Vegetable Chicken Dinner, Turkey and Mixed Vegetables, Turkey, Chicken, Beef, Applesauce, Bananas, Mixed fruit, Chicken and Apples, Puffs, Mum-Mums, Apple Wagon Wheels, and baby Milk.  At this point, the doctor said she can have anything that we want to give her except honey and nuts.  We are still giving  a firm no to sodas, candy, and most refined sugars.  We think that she should wait to experience those "treasures."

Emmarie's 1st Birthday Party {Fun Stuff}

After we had done all of the traditional birthday party stuff: food, cake, presents... We went outside to play on the WATER SLIDE!  My dad is a go big or go home kind of guy, so when we started looking at waterslide rentals for Emmy's party and Kari's graduation, he decided instead to buy one.   So the beauty that you will see below is available to be rented if you are  in the south Texas area. :)

One  more picture of the birthday girl because how can it be a birthday post without her.

IMG_2298

We got a family picture of the three of us on this milestone day.  We all look happy, and I think that describes how we really felt that day.
IMG_2297

Here is a picture of Emmy and Daddy.
IMG_2288

Lauren and I have been friends since middle school, and now our babies will be able to grow up hanging out as well.
IMG_2282

Emmy was super excited about the water table that Brian and his family got her.  She wanted to open the box and set it up right then!
IMG_2369

Melinda is another one of my life long friends.  She made the trip down from Austin to be with Emmy for her birthday.
IMG_2411

She got a couple of super cute outfits from Ollie, April, and Mike.
IMG_2405

Then it was time to get outside to the slide.  I took a million a lot of pictures, but I will try not to bombard you.  Emmy was fearless, and she even went down the slide a couple of times on her own without Daddy.
IMG_2421

Mal thought the slide was super fun!
IMG_2180

Layla couldn't wait to climb up and go again!
IMG_2182

Some of the "older" people thought it was fun just to watch. :)
IMG_2433

Steve and Dana won the prize for best splash!
IMG_2437

Emmy hugged all over Papa and Granny.
IMG_2448

She modeled the new backpack that Grandma Susan made for her!
IMG_2453

She showed off the activity walker that Henry brought her.
IMG_2472

And she unwrapped the sweet puppy that Raeassia, Trey, and Darryl gave her!
IMG_2486

All in all her birthday was a day full of fun, love, and happiness.  We are so blessed to have so many wonderful people in Emmy's life that wanted to celebrate with her.  I hope that in the coming years, they will all continue to have such a positive impact on her life.

After the party was over, I started thinking about what her theme for next year's party should be.  Bradley just shook his head and sighed.

Emmarie's 1st Birthday Party {Cake Smash}

The cake smash was one of my favortie parts of first birthday parties.  Emmy's cakes were especially beautiful (in my unbiased opinon of course).  Raeassia worked so hard on Emmarie's cakes.  She made a three tier cake and two smash cakes: one for the party and one for professional pictures.   Each cake was made up of seven different colored layers of cake, one for each part of the rainbow.  I gave her an idea of what I wanted, but she took the meager ideas I provided and ran with them.  Everything was so much more beautiful than I could have expected.  You will notice below that she even tried to match the smash cake to the invitation.
IMG_2201

Here is Emmy standing by her cake.  It is almost as tall as she is.
IMG_2303

She looks so confused about why she is being allowed to stand on the table.
IMG_2305

I am so amazed that this year passed by so quickly when I look at my sweet little "big" girl.  She was enthralled with the candle.
IMG_2318

At first she wasn't quite sure what to do with the cake.  The outer layers of icing were a little thick, and she had only had cake once before on her actual birthday.
IMG_2323

But it did not take her long to figure out what was "going on" on her plate.
IMG_2331

She was quite happy to make a wonderful mess.  And for once, I was happy to let her do it.
IMG_2337

She was in such a good mood from her sugar high that she was even willing to share her cake with Nana.
IMG_2342

If I had to caption this picture, I would say "Nana, watch this!"
IMG_2344

It is amazing how happy a little bit of refined sugar can make a one-year-old.
IMG_2348

That's probably the biggest she smiled the whole day.
IMG_2349

Her aunts sure do love her a lot!
IMG_2361

We decided to take a mini group pic of the people that take care of her on a daily basis.  I don't know what I would have done without each of them this past year.
IMG_2362

A slightly blurry picture where you can see all of the layers inside the cake.
IMG_2364

Nana was eager to start passing out the cake.
IMG_2370

This is the remnants of the smash cake.  She ripped the top red layer off in all of her Godzilla-like destruction.
IMG_2366

Everyone (especially Dana and Halle) seemed to enjoy  the cake.

Emmarie's 1st Birthday Party {Say Cheese}

IMG_2250

There were lots of special people that made it to Emmy's 1st Birthday Party.  In the picture above, you can see her birthday outfit.  My cousin Billie made the embroidered shirt for her.

This is a picture of Aunt Kari, GiGi, and Oliver.  He was almost as big as Emmy already.
IMG_2103

Henry and Lauren were there, and he was ready to Par-tay!
IMG_2089

Layly was feeling a little camera shy, but Nicole didn't mind giving us a smile.
IMG_2090

Aunt B tried to juggle two babies.  We laugh and say that these are our twins.
IMG_2125

A quick pic of Mommy and the birthday girl.  She wasn't impressed.
IMG_2128

Ms. Halle was here and took a pic with Brittany.
IMG_2135

Hmmm...someone stole the camera for a moment for some selfies.
IMG_2142

Nana was hard at work in the kitchen.
IMG_2144

Ms. Linda came to hang out with us as well.  Henry was really excited to wear that hat.
IMG_2159

Christopher and Emma enjoyed the hot dogs.
IMG_2195

We headed outside to take a few pictures of the littles.  These are some of the cousins from my mom's side of the family.  I think they are going to be so close!
IMG_2256

These are the cousins from Brad's family.  So far, these are all of the grandkids that Joe has!  They are a cute bunch aren't they?
IMG_2271

Great-uncle Robbie stopped in to see the birthday girl!
IMG_2397

Aunt April had to leave early, but she wanted to get a picture with Emmy!
IMG_2408

There are probably a hundred more pictures that I needed to post, and there were tons of people there that refused to have their picture taken (party poopers), but this was a nice sampling of the group!
